8 benefits of buying organic food when you don’t grow it yourself or can’t talk to the people that grow it.
If only we could grow our own food. Every bit of it, wouldn’t that be really cool? Maybe. Or if we could talk to the people growing and preparing our food before we bought every morsel. Now that would be slick.
Even the most resourceful people can’t grow everything themselves. They learn to barter, do without, and buy from stores.
The reality is many times you don’t know who grew your food or raised your meat. You might not know what country your food was grown in either. The pureness of your food source is no longer guaranteed. Big agriculture and government dictate how your food is raised from seed to table. Even if it doesn’t make sense for your health and well-being. That’s when buying certified organic might be your best choice.
No – nothing is perfect and yes there are recalls on all sorts of food from conventionally grown to organic to greenhouses. But at least when you buy the certified organic label you are getting some peace of mind.
Benefits of buying and eating organic food.
1) Only Non-GMO (genetically modified) products in your food:
Yes, organic means only non-GMO foods and food products. For your fruits and vegetables, this means no GMO from seed to table. For your meat it means from pregnancy to table, except for chicken, which is from birth to table. This means your animals eat only organic pastures, hay, and feed.
The food industry introduced GM foods in 1994 to “help” the food industry create more and better food.
The first GM produce was the Flavr Savr tomato. The genetic changes delayed ripening of the tomato, adding shelf life.
In theory, this might sound fabulous, less waste and more food for the consumer. Today’s GM foods add pesticides, change the DNA and have added organisms to gain a benefit. A benefit for the food industry, not you. When you eat GM foods the altered DNA enters your body making you a guinea pig.
Would you give your child a bottle of pesticides to drink, even it was deemed diluted enough and safe? I definitely wouldn’t – Would you?

2) No pesticides or chemicals used during raising or processing your food:
Not all apples grow the same manner. An organic apple is grown without chemicals. The soil the apple tree grows in contains only organic material. The trees cannot be from a genetically modified seed. And an organic apple doesn’t need to be washed in wax, for nature gives every apple its own shine. Some organic apple companies are now using a wax-like coating, which is non-GMO and is considered organic to help with shelf life.
In a non-organic apple orchards trees are sprayed with pesticides and chemicals. Once picked, apples get a power washing, which is supposed to remove dust and chemical residues. This washing also removes the natural apple wax.
After washing, apples get a new coat of wax. Do you think any leftover chemicals get sealed back into the apple? Hmm, I’m thinking they do. But YOU decide for YOU.
When buying organic you don’t have to worry about pesticides being sealed into your food.
2) No synthetic fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides:
Organic food cannot be in contact with synthetic or man-made chemical fertilizer, herbicides or pesticides. Man creates synthetic fertilizer through different chemical processes to kill unwanted pests and weeds.
Organic growers use fertilizer or compost made from recycled plants, dried animal matter and time. This means the organic farmer uses natural means to add nutrition to the soil.
Which would you rather have, your food grown in compost or chemicals? You choose.
4) Animal health and welfare:
Organic animals are raised in a humane and natural way from birth to butcher. This includes having space in the great outdoors. It means allowing animals to act like animals. Cows on pasture, chickens roaming, and pigs in mud puddles. Animals can be fed certified organic grain, but for rumen animals such as cows, goats and sheep grass fed is healthier for you and the animal.
Certified organic meat, eggs milk and cheese give a guarantee to you and the animals that your food is coming from a natural place.
5) No artificial coloring, flavoring, or preservatives:
Do you see bright red coloring in your cereal? How about the yellow-green coloring of the pickle juice? Look at the ingredients. Most likely you’ll discover the coloring is a synthetic coloring or dyes. Most bright food dyes consist of chemicals, petroleum, and other synthetic means. Organic products use natural coloring such as beet juice.
Preservatives add shelf life to your food, but they don’t need to be artificial.
You may find tocopherols, which is created from vitamin E, added for freshness in organic foods.

Other artificial flavors are hidden ingredients in your food. You have no idea what you are getting.
You will find other natural flavorings in organic food, which I am not too pleased with either and tend to stay away from – but I know these other natural flavors are organic with the 100% organic certified label on them.
6) No antibiotics or growth hormones used in the raising of organic products:
This means you don’t need to worry about added hormones or antibiotics in your food, body or water supply.
7) Still get your junk food fix.
If you’re a junk food junky you can still eat clean food without pesticides, dyes, GMO, etc. And still get your junk food fix. Organic food is available in every form, from cookies to candies, pop and more.
Yes, you will be eating processed food, but if your goal is to have some junk without the rest of the mess, then buying organic junk food is the way to go.
8) Plus you are supporting what you believe in.
By buying organic you support the people who grow food in the manner you want. If you buy non-organic food you are supporting the industry that is trying to pesticide poison you, your kids, your environment while making you think there is no harm.
By supporting the organic industry more food becomes available and prices come down.
If nothing else, eating organically gives you peace of mind when you can’t grow it all yourself.
